Simon Lucas is an elder of the Hesquiat Nation of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples. He is a carver and a painter though he is most well known for his role in restoring the Hesquait band after a devastating tidal wave in 1963. In 2002 he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of British Columbia for his contributions to both the aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities. He is the Coastal Co-Chair of the British Columbia Aboriginal Fisheries Commission as well as a board member of the Aboriginal Council of British Columbia, and the Native Brotherhood of British Columbia.
