Wilson, Joseph M.; Sxwaset (b.1967)

Cultural Group : Coast Salish, Cowichan

Born in 1967, Joseph Wilson is a member of the Cowichan Band in Duncan, B.C. At the age of 16, Joe discovered an interest in Native art through inspiration from his family, and later began studying, carving and painting under the guidance of master carver Simon Charlie. Pursuing his new found career, Joe sought more experience by working with other artists such as Jim Gilbert, Tim Paul and Charles Elliot. He has also studied Salish art extensively through literature and museum collections. Joe is actively involved in the winter dance ceremonies of his people. He currently resides on the Tsartlip reserve near Victoria where he continues to paint and carve cedar. The artist says: "Through my learning experiences, I've found that I have acquired a style which I like doing and it is continuing to grow. It also allows me to express myself in many different ways and I look forward to future projects."
