The traditional territory of the Squamish First Nation makes up much of the greater Vancouver area, Gibsons landing and the Squamish river watersheds. There are 24 reserves and 16 Squamish tribes that make up the Squamish language and the language of the Squamish is Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Snichim. Like many other Coast Salish communities, the Squamish have many stories of transformation sites, where their ancestors where transformed into important landmarks. 1
The University of Victoria's Art Collections has a number of Squamish artist Floyd 'Tyee' Joseph's prints and carvings. Joseph's work is extremely well-known and his bright colours and use of contemporary forms express the liveliness of his practice and his culture.
